We were are asked, in a very general sense, to propose, design, and describe a physical place that is mediated in some manner by information technology, with a focus on material and energy flows. We chose lighting as our topic because it is one of the biggest sources of energy consumption in commercial buildings. Moreover, lighting systems are not efficient and they cannot easily be tailored to particular needs of the individuals.

Our team developed a model for a hybrid (a mixture of centralized and distributed) lighting system that would provide calm, appropriate light where it was needed. Our design focused on the interaction between an individual and the lighting system at the level of a section of the library with multiple study carrels.
